Seasonal Maintenance in Boulder, CO

Our company is where mindful property owners find and customize our custom landscaping to build beautiful and well-curated landscapes.

The Right Care at the Right Time

Landscapes have a rhythm of their own.

What a garden needs in early spring is different from what it needs during the heat of summer, as temperatures begin to cool in fall, or during Colorado’s dry winter months.

Idlewild’s Seasonal Maintenance is built around those changing needs. Rather than approaching landscape care as the same list of tasks repeated week after week, we visit at key points throughout the year to give plants, soils, and irrigation systems the attention they need for the season ahead.

Care That Understands the Garden

Good landscape maintenance requires more than keeping things tidy. Knowing when to prune, when to leave a plant alone, how to encourage another flush of blooms, when irrigation should be adjusted, or when a struggling area is telling us something about the soil takes horticultural knowledge and familiarity with the landscape. Our team looks at how the garden is growing and responds accordingly. That might mean pruning perennials and shrubs to encourage healthy new growth in spring, deadheading during the growing season to extend flowering, adjusting irrigation as temperatures change, replenishing nutrients, or preparing plants to better withstand winter conditions. The goal is not simply a landscape that looks cared for after we leave. It is a landscape that becomes healthier because of the care it receives.

Following the Seasons

Our maintenance visits are intentionally timed around important transitions in the Colorado landscape.

Spring is about preparing the garden for the growing season—cleaning beds, pruning where appropriate, managing early weeds, and giving plants room to emerge.

As the growing season begins, irrigation systems are turned on and evaluated, planting beds are weeded and deadheaded, and nutrients can be added to support healthy growth.

Through summer, we respond to heat and changing water needs while caring for flowering plants and keeping beds healthy and productive.

In fall, irrigation is adjusted as temperatures cool, plants are tended to encourage late-season interest where possible, and the landscape begins its transition toward dormancy.

Before winter, appropriate perennials and shrubs are cut back or pruned, leaves and debris are managed, and vulnerable plants are prepared for snow and cold.

And because Colorado winters can be remarkably dry, winter care may also include hand-watering trees, shrubs, and perennials to protect root systems and support plant health through periods of winter drought.

More Than a Spring and Fall Cleanup

Seasonal Maintenance also gives us an opportunity to notice what is happening within the landscape. An irrigation zone may need adjustment. A perennial may be outgrowing its space. Soil may need additional organic matter or nutrients. A planting bed may be ready for refreshing. A once-small shrub may now be changing the balance of the garden. Because we are already working within the landscape, we can recognize these changes and help address them before small issues become larger ones. When appropriate, we can also recommend enhancements such as refreshing planting beds or seasonal containers to add another layer of interest to the property.

Helping a Landscape Reach Its Potential

A well-designed garden is intended to change. Plants establish, spread, flower, go dormant, and return. Over time, they begin to relate to one another in ways that simply aren’t possible when a landscape is first installed. Seasonal care helps guide that process. Our role is not to make the garden look exactly the same throughout the year. It is to understand what each season asks of it—and provide the care that allows the landscape to become healthier, fuller, and more established with time.
