Water Features & Aquatic Retreats in Boulder, CO

Designed for both recreation and restoration, aquatic retreats transform the backyard into a private destination.

Bringing Water Into the Landscape

Few elements change the feeling of a landscape the way water does.

The sound of a fountain can soften a busy street. A plunge pool can turn a quiet corner into a daily ritual. A hot tub under the stars can make a winter evening one of the best times to be outside.

We design water into the landscape so it feels as though it has always belonged there. It shouldn’t be a feature added on at the end. It should be part of how the whole property is experienced.

Poolscapes, Hot Tubs & Plunge Pools

Aquatic retreats are designed for both recreation and restoration.

Working with trusted partners like Evo Pools and Soake Pools, we integrate pools, hot tubs, and plunge pools with the patios, planting, lighting, and structures around them.

Where the water sits, how you reach it, the view from it, privacy and shade, and how it connects to the house all shape how often a pool or spa actually gets used. We consider these decisions from the very first sketch.

Paired with a sauna, an outdoor shower, a fire feature, or a lounge terrace, these spaces become a private retreat you can enjoy in every season.

Fountains, Basins & Garden Water

Water doesn’t have to be large to make an impact.

A bubbling stone basin by the front door. A fountain beside the dining patio. A birdbath that brings songbirds and pollinators into the garden.

Small features like these add movement, sound, and a sense of calm. They can draw the eye through a garden, create a focal point from inside the house, or quiet the noise of a nearby street.

Designed for Colorado

Water in a semi-arid climate deserves care.

We favor recirculating systems and efficient equipment that use water thoughtfully. We also plan for Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycles, so features are simple to winterize and ready to enjoy again in spring.

Materials are chosen to stand up to strong sun, snow, and hard water, and to complement the stone, planting, and architecture already on the property.

Part of the Whole Design

Because Idlewild is a design-build company, your water feature is designed and built by the same team responsible for the rest of your landscape.

Grading, drainage, power, equipment access, the surrounding hardscape, and the planting are all planned together. The finished space feels cohesive and performs as beautifully as it looks.
